CARACENI INTERVIEW

The history of F. Caraceni Tailoring

The history of Sartoria F. Caraceni began with Maestro Ferdinando Caraceni who arrived in Milan in 1939. He first worked with Domenico in via Montenapoleone and then went to war. Back, he went to work with Mr. Augusto Caraceni who had opened a tailor's atelier with Mario Donnini in via Fatebenefratelli. He became the first cutter and remained with them until 1967 when he opened his own atelier in Via San Marco in Milan. Ferdinando left us in 2004 and his daughter, Nicoletta Caraceni, who worked with her father for over 20 years, decided to carry on the atelier with the same principles as her father, maintaining an exclusively artisan production and a maniacal quality, which begins with the choice of fabric: “whether they are English fabrics, cashmere from Scotland or linen from Ireland, they must always be the best".
Among many professional paths followed by Nicoletta, a long path has been dedicated to learning all the secrets of a great jacket. What is style really? In what way is a jacket different and more elegant than any other? Ferdinando said that "there is a threshold beyond which art ceases and industry begins". Nicoletta also agrees with her father and for this reason Sartoria Caraceni does not produce more than 200 pieces per year.
On her way, Nicoletta has received several awards and recognitions. We remember in November 2014 "Scissors of gold union tailors Milan", in February 2016, the prize of the "Centre de Luxe et Creation" in Paris for best Entreprise d'Art et Metiers and in June 2016 the prize MAM in Milan, "Master of Art and Craft".
Sartoria Caraceni is closely linked to the Italian territory and its tradition: "We descend from Michelangelo, Leonardo, Botticelli, Brunelleschi. We have a history of centuries and great artisans".
Sartoria Caraceni manufactures jackets, trousers, coats, vests for men and women with complex techniques, with a very long apprenticeship entirely handmade.
On the emotional aspects that have contributed to make her reach the most important goals, Nicoletta recalls: "What moves me every day is the continuous search for Beauty. My search for Beauty has distant origins: at the age of 19 dad took me for the first time with him to Paris. We went from one beautiful house to another to make customers try on the clothes. I remember Prince Caracciolo, Madame Rochas and then Rue de Babylone, the magnificent home of Pierre Bergè and Yves Saint Laurent. We were waiting for them to rehearse in a wonderful "museum" room. On the walls, I watched captivated paintings by Monet, Picasso, Van Gogh and a wonderful 4-tone green portrait of Andy Warhol's YSL. Finally, the door opens, Yves enters and, going towards my father, while he was extending his arms, says "Bonjour Maestro!" And at that precise moment I understood who my father was and what I wanted from life. A precious and indelible memory that will accompany me for the rest of my life and that makes me proud to carry around the world the high Italian craftsmanship”.
