Alessandro Lovisetto is Founder and CEO of Artknit Studios, a brand and digital platform that connects the best Italian knitwear manufacturers to final customers from all over the world.

Brand’s story: how and when was created?

We were born in early 2019 within the Fashion Technology Accelerator in Milan. At that time I was still working in Finance, in London but my family has more than 30 years experience in textile, gained in the capital of wool, Biella. This element highly impacted the creation of Artknit and, not surprisingly, wool was the starting point for most of our products. I wanted to go back to Italy and commit to a business project able to enhance the place I grew up in. I then decided to quit my job and started visiting knitwear factories and spinning mills around Italy to understand how a new model 100 digital% could be implemented with the aim of enhancing the supply chain and, at the same time, reducing the environmental impact. After countless trips and interviews, we presented our idea to several accelerators in Europe and in March 2019 we launched the platform. Now our team counts 9 people under 30 with an all-Italian supply chain made up of over 15 families between manufacturers and artisans. Artknit Studios was launched to the public in mid-2019 with the aim of creating a new way of purchasing. Our model enhances the supply chain and allows customers to buy directly from artisans in order to create better products, better made. All this is possible thanks to our integrated vertical supply chain that connects final customers directly to the best Italian manufacturers, avoiding all intermediaries. In this way, we are able to make the quality of luxury accessible, avoiding the typical mark-ups of traditional brands. Furthermore, having an all-Italian production, allows us to drastically reduce our environmental impact.

Artknit Studios is a responsible and sustainable brand, tell us about how you are committed to the environment.

Sustainability is a crucial part of our model as we see it is a tool to improve ourselves every day. We define ourselves sustainable for several reasons. First of all, we have a short and transparent supply chain: raw materials are locally sourced and, by selling directly to final customers without intermediaries, we are able to reduce distances and therefore, our CO2 emissions. We only use natural or regenerated raw materials that are naturally biodegradable, recyclable and come from low impact renewable sources. We collaborate with artisan workshops integrated with just-in-time or made-to-order production models in order to produce only what we sell and minimize waste. Some items are produced in small quantities from month to month, while others are produced only after an order is placed. Furthermore, unlike traditional brands we do not offer new collections every season, but we offer a permanent collection of timeless products that can be worn for a long time and by anyone. Our philosophy embraces the slow fashion movement and for this reason we prefer to engage in the creation of a few products, but well made.

Aesthetically, what is the DNA of your products and who are they addressed to?

We offer a permanent collection of timeless products, mainly knitwear; and we design garments that can be worn for a long time and by anyone. The palette is mainly made of natural colors to respect our wools softness and to make our garments even more elegant and timeless. We cater to a young but sophisticated international audience very attentive to what they buy and looking for high quality products with low environmental footprint. Artknit products have a minimal and modern lifestyle and are designed for everyday life.
