ECOALF SS22

What is the mission of Ecoalf, what kind of objectives does it want to tackle?

Since 2009, the year Ecoalf was founded, Javier Goyeneche - president and founder of the brand - wanted to create a truly sustainable brand and for him to be truly sustainable meant to stop using natural resources unconditionally. At Ecoalf we believe that recycling is the solution, if we are able to create a new generation of recycled products with the same quality and design as the best non-recycled products.

Which materials do you recycle, how do you use them and where do you produce?

We recycle cotton, wool, PET, fishing nets, abandoned tires to produce accessories, outerwear, sneakers. We have developed over 450 materials by recycling plastic bottles recovered from oceans, rivers, recycled nylon ... now for the SS22 collection we have used materials with low environmental impact such as linen, tencel, hemp, materials that save a lot of water, reduce CO2 emissions , for example we produce recycled cotton in Portugal… and soon we will start producing in Italy with incredible partners to achieve incredible quality!

In 2015 the Ecoalf Foundation committed to a very ambitious project: upcycling the ocean. What is it, what are the goals you have reached thanks to this initiative?

Upcycling the Oceans is a worldwide adventure that aims to remove waste from the seabed thanks to the invaluable help of trawler fishermen. The Mediterranean Sea is an almost closed basin where currents bring 80% of plastic waste back to the coasts resulting in more than 5kg of plastic accumulate in every kilometer, every day. Mare nostrum counts only for 1% of global waters, but it contains 7% of marine microplastics. If we don’t stop plastic waste, there will be more plastics than fish in the oceans by 2050. For this reason the ECOALF Foundation is trying to replicate Upcycling the Oceans in the Mediterranean Sea by putting together a group of fishermen for the protection of our seas. This project has three objectives:

- remove the garbage that seriously endangers the ecosystem of our seas

- give a second life to this garbage (circular economy)

- raise awareness among the people about this serious problem

In Spain we collaborate with 40 seaports and more than 3,000 fishermen (we collect more than 150 tons of garbage a year), in Greece with 16 ports, in Italy we started last October in Civitavecchia with 16 fishing boats and we are in the process of expanding UTO also in Gaeta and Formia.

Which is the most important goal for Ecoalf in the next years?

As a B-Corp, we are working on becoming a NET ZERO brand by 2030.

What are you presenting during this edition of the WSM?

For SS2022, Ecoalf confirms its commitment to safeguarding the oceans, due to rising temperatures the corals are losing their wonderful colors. The colors of the SS22 collection range from bright orange to pale pink to white. The materials used are at the forefront of sustainability, low environmental impact materials such as linen, hemp and recycled cotton are used to reduce water consumption and CO2 emissions. Our collection focuses on the loss of colors due to rising temperatures and now is the time to act and to decide if we are the problem or if we want to be part of the solution.
