GENTILE MILANO SS22

In 2016 he left Puglia to move to Milan, where he studied fashion design at NABA. He is Gioacchino Gentile, 24, founder of the brand Gentile Milano. "I have always felt the need to communicate, to express my inner world. During the lockdown I developed the idea of creating my own brand where I can tell my aesthetic. In 2020 I experimented with two capsule collections, almost for fun, and then launched the first no-season collection in February 2021 ».

Why this name?

The name Gentile has a double meaning. First of all it is my surname, it contains my roots, my story. But it is also the adjective (it means “kind” in Italian) that defines my aesthetics, the attitude of those who wear my clothes.

Why a responsible brand?

When I moved to Milan, I began to regularly go to flea markets and vintage shops with my friends from university. At the same time I made some considerations about the fashion system and developed my own personal ethics. From here it came natural to combine this with my aesthetics and my passion for vintage.

What other values does your brand embrace?

The brand aims to include anyone who feels kind. The collection “lInnamorati a Milan” in particular, presents genderless looks designed to dress people without barriers. Gentile Milano wants to get away from any definition. Furthermore, all garments are handmade based on customer's needs, since we want to stay away from a system that bases  bodies on sizes and not the other way around. Therefore, Gentile works with upcycled items too, unique and unrepeatable, seeking for solutions that can equally satisfy customer's needs.

Where do the materials come from?

The fabrics we use are unused materials coming from warehouses, remnants, dead-stock of refined fabrics between Milan and Puglia. Some garments, on the other hand, are made from vintage garments rediscovered across Milanese vintage markets.

How is your brand unique?

In the uniqueness of the garments themselves: each dress is produced with a unique material, 100% upcycled. From these it is possible to produce very few different garments and, therefore, they are one-of-a-kind or custom-made pieces that can only be partially replicated.

Tell us about your latest collection.

It's called Innamorati a Milano and it tells a love story lived in Milan and with Milan. It tells about the love of the Gentile generation, those guys halfway between the past pictured by postcards and old movies, and the more sustainable and inclusive future. The garments themselves maintain a link with the past but turn to the future: they are designed to dress both man and woman, eliminating any gender discrimination. Through fabrics such as brocade and chiffon, Gentile also wants to tell the most intimate part of this generation: strong yet fragile, able to face difficulties but not love pain.

Make a wish for yourself and one for the future of the fashion system.

Our desire is to become a point of reference for the generation of nostalgics halfway between the past and the future, of course; picture a world that can immediately refer to us. As for the future of the Italian fashion system, we hope for an ethical evolution: starting from leaving the logics of fast fashion to embrace craftsmanship and made in Italy relaunch.
