Henry Beguelin, the brand that turns waste into fashion

by Angelo Ruggeri

From straws, cans, and bottle caps left on the beaches of Elba Island to cool & green accessories for fashionable customers: this is the magic formula of the brand Herny Beguelin, set up in the '80s on Elba Island. Since then, the daily challenge has not changed: to surprise and be eco-sustainable, as the president and creative director Tullio Marani explained in the following interview.

How was the brand Henry Beguelin born?

Henry Beguelin is our story of an itinerant journey that started at the end of the '80s. It was born on Elba Island from my encounter with Henry Beguelin, a craftsman. The brand has evolved, bringing the excellence of Italian leatherwork to the world, which is vegetable-dyed and handcrafted. Tullio Marani has been collecting objects since he was a kid. He managed to insert his experience in the remote lands of Himalaya, the Amazons, and Asia into Henry Beguelin's collections. He mixed details such as the "murrine" from Africa produced originally in Venice, woven fabrics, and other ethnic decorations with a minimal and clean aesthetic.

How important is sustainability for the brand?

The topic of sustainability is an integral part of our history. Since its foundation, the brand has immediately taken an eco-friendly direction. Like the choice of using completely vegetable-tanned leather, respecting the environment, and antiallergenic, excluding any chemical process. The leather features inimitable chromatic tones, softness, and resistance. They guarantee good skin aging. As well as manual processes, with zero impact, without any toxic emissions that might come from production plants.

How is the new collection developed?

The collection we are presenting now amplifies our approach to naturalness. Materials, accessories, fittings, and colors recall nature and simplicity. The lightness of every detail represents the spirit of the collection, a lightness that we all need in such a difficult moment. The new products of the year are the Piuma shearling coats that, with their incredible refinement, quality and finishings, represent all the lightness of the collection.

What is the belt Spazzatura (Waste)?

The belt Spazzatura, like the bag Secchiello (Bucket) decorated with pieces of cans, represents 100% the uniqueness of our product. They are the first products born on the beaches of Elba Island, made of natural leather and decorated with straws, cans, bottle caps. What for others was waste became part of our history, showing the eco-sustainability of the brand. The belt Spazzatura became the representative model of the brand Comme des Garçons, wanted by Rei Kawakubo.
