Seay: the sustainable beachwear brand and the new circular economy model

SHARE

By Caterina Di Iorgi

Seay is recycled fabrics, a short-range supply chain, a carbon-neutral distribution, and organic and compostable packaging. But that's not all. Seay is a sustainable beachwear brand and with low environmental impact, created with certified materials.

We interviewed Simone Scodellaro, the founder of Soseaty:

How did you get the idea of Seay? Why this name?

We started with the name Soseaty Collective because it is the union of two words: SOS and sea. Its pronunciation is the same as Society, thus a group that helps the sea considering the pollution caused by plastic waste. Soseaty Collective is the platform with which we will create different sustainable brands. The first one is Seay that is related to clothing. When we started, Alberto Bressan and I, as founding partners, were just the two of us. Now, the team is made of nine people.

Where do the inspiration and the style of your collections come from?

We created the first collections in collaboration with Eduardo Bolioli, an Uruguayan artist who lives in Hawaii. He designed surfboards for the greatest surfers of the '80s, from Kelly Slater to Sunny Garcia. For the second collection, we decided to create an entire design team to expand our inspirational world.

Would you tell us about the fabrics of your collections and their sustainability?

Our men's beachwear and windbreakers are produced 100% with recycled plastic that can be the plastic collected from oceans or the post-consumer one. Wheres in the women's line, we are not able to be 100% sustainable because there is an elastic part, the elastomer, that is not possible to produce with recycled materials. In this case, the sustainability of the garment is up to 90%. For sweatshirts and T-shirts, we use organic GOTS-certified cotton. All our products are Made in Italy and we produce them in Veneto. Our core business is a product made of recycled materials, regenerated and certified. But since we have chosen to take care of all aspects of our company, we bag all garments in organic and compostable packaging to be as green as possible. Moreover, we use a carbon-neutral logistic.

Which business model did you invent?

The model is called Re3. It was born as a green bonus for all clients who decided to give back to Seay one of the garments they no longer wear. Re3 because collected secondhand clothes are reused, resold, and regenerated according to their aesthetic and functional conditions. For each sold garment we refund 20% of the garment's value if the customer gives us back a garment of the same typology as the one he/she has just purchased. According to its conditions, it is resold as a vintage garment by the cooperative that helps us collect secondhand clothes of our customers (RE- sell), or it is donated to people in need (RE-use). If its conditions are bad, it is regenerated (RE-generate) into a new yarn that will become the fabric we are going to use for the production of our future collections. With Re-sell and Re-use, we contribute to expanding the lifecycle of garments that are still wearable, while with Re-generate we aim at a circular closed model. We have also mentioned transparency and it is the moment to talk about the tracking of collected secondhand clothes. Thanks to a QR code tracking system, our customers have the chance to verify in real-time how the garments that they gave us are used.
