VANADIO23 INTERVIEW

Tell us about your journey and how your brand began? 

"The essence of my reality is painting. I have always painted. It is this passion that led me to study art first and then start working as a commision painter. In 2014 I was contacted by a Roman fur and leather atelier. Through this creation of a collection of hand-painted furs I discovered a new world, a new material I had never used before: leather. Since then this element has been with me though every creation, revolutionizing my art form and the universe of subjects I represent. A few years later, in 2017 I began creating something more personal. This is how my brand came about: VANADIO23, a reflection of myself and a way to give vent to my creativity."

How do you continue traditions and keep up with the times?

"I don’t see heritage as an absolute value or something so pure that I can’t touch. On the contrary, I think that the desecration of that exact tradition may be the only way to get rid of a heavy burden and accomplish something new and innovative."

What are your iconic pieces that characterize your brand and how were they created?

"The jacket inspired by workwear, remains the most important item throughout all my collections and recalls the inextricable connection to the working world from which Vanadio23 takes its name. Vanadium is, in fact, the element used in the metallurgical industry for the construction of working tools like screwdrivers, wrenches or allen wrenches. Functionality and masculine volumes are lightened by elaborate paintings rich in color. This contrast allows the collection to be gender fluid and dress any type of individual. At the origin of everything there is my great passion for coats. In fact for years I researched many types, through second hand markets or vintage stalls. The jacket symbol of my collection comes from the combination of my favourite outware with a cleanliness and severity of the lines allowing the painting to speak and not its structure."

Which handcraft techniques part of your heritage do you still use today?

"My brand has changed a lot over the years. I’m trying to experiment with new solutions that can be more practical for my business and the market. My collections are made by one of the most important Italian textile manufacturers, in fact they are handmade with incredible care and skill. In addition to manufacturing expertise, there is also the heritage of leather tanning, often treated with natural colours and organic finishing. Subjects and themes which inspire the garments look to the future but with the wisdom and the mastery of tradition."

Projects for the future and what strategies you are developing to overcome this moment? 

"I would like to find a more organic, more simple and personal way of being part of the fashion scene. I now rely on online sales and the type of strategy see now/buy now. By reducing production costs for samples and sales campaigns, the brand can focus on a targeted marketing and communication strategy, aimed at advertising through influencers, magazines and sponsorships. I am also trying to adopt an increasingly sustainable way that goes beyond the classic seasonality, proposing a carry over product, available on the e-commerce platform: www.vanadio23.com ."
